RICHARD KAY; THE SECOND COMING OF PETER JAY

NOT since Time magazine called him 'the cleverest young man in England' and a future world leader has Peter Jay been presented with such an opportunity for prominence.

A former Ambassador to Washington who made more headlines from his private life than in the diplomatic world, Jay, now 72, is preparing for a second coming -- as chairman of the Garrick, one of the smartest gentlemen's clubs in London.

Next month, the sitting chairman, writer Dr Barry Turner, is retiring and Jay, who stays at the club at least once a week, has been nominated as a candidate to replace him.

He faces only one opponent for the job, QC and recorder Jonathan Acton Davis, 56.

Jay, a father of seven, tells me: 'I think it is fair to say that I have actively put my hat in the ring, so to speak. The other candidate is a very nice man and the vote will take place early next month.'

So how does he stand on the contentious issue of admitting women to the all-male club?

'Actually, there is no rule that women cannot be members,' says Jay, who was proposed for membership 33 years ago by former Times editor William Rees-Mogg. 'It just so happens that no woman has ever been elected and as far as I am aware no woman has ever been proposed.'

He is keeping his own plans for the Garrick under wraps. However, his elevation to the prestigious post of chairman of the club, which numbers distinguished actors and men of letters among its 1,300 members, represents an intriguing twist in the Jay story.

After returning from Washington, Jay, who was married to former Labour prime minister Jim Callaghan's daughter, Margaret, helped start TV-am. In 1974, he was voted the Royal Television Society's personality of the year.

Twice-married Jay, a former economics editor of the BBC, always managed to keep his name on everyone's lips, not because of his brilliant career but due to his chaotic personal life.

When Margaret began an affair with Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein, Bernstein's author wife Nora Ephron turned the story into a book, and later a film called Heartburn starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep.

Jay, meanwhile, famously had a fling with his children's nanny, fathering a son, Nicholas, now aged 28.

JUST two days after celebrating his 90th birthday, former Tory Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington is mourning the death of his much-loved wife of 67 years, Iona, who passed away on Sunday.

The mother of three -- one daughter, Virginia, is an assistant to the Prince of Wales -- had been ill for some time and had been cared for by her devoted husband.

Lady Carrington's father was flying pioneer Sir Francis McClean, who once flew with Wilbur Wright, one half of the Wright Brothers.

AT LAST! KATE GETS A ROYAL WEDDING (AS WILLIAM'S COUSIN TIES THE KNOT)

FRIENDS have long been waiting for the day Prince William walks Kate Middleton (left) down the aisle at a wedding. But while they will have to wait a little longer for that happy day, the Prince and his girlfriend were together for the marriage of William's cousin Laura Fellowes. Laura, 28, the daughter of the Queen's former private secretary Lord Fellowes, married City worker Nick Pettman, 34, at Snettisham, Norfolk, close to her parents' home. And for two holidaymakers it was something of a red letter day. While staying at a nearby caravan park, Josie Williams and Wendy Ablett, from Spalding in Lincolnshire, stumbled across the pretty parish church, where they bumped into Laura's mother, Lady Jane, who gave them a tour of the church and a bit part in the afternoon's wedding. 'It was so exciting,' beams Josie. 'The bride came in through a sidegate from the vicarage. It was very low key. Her outfit was made from her grandmother's wedding dress. 'We watched the guests going in, including William, Kate and Earl Spencer, and were standing by the church door when a man beckoned us in, gave us a lovely order of service and showed us to a pew. 'It was a beautiful wedding, but we'd have looked smarter if we'd known -- Wendy and I were in cropped trousers, T-shirts and sandals.'

THERE has been a power shift at AlnwickCastle -- Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, and home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. For Jane Percy now outranks her husband Ralph after being appointed Northumberland's first female lord-lieutenant. 'The Duke's deputy-lieutenant, so Jane's technically his boss,' I am told. The Duchess's appointment neatly avoids the possibility of a row had Gordon Brown chosen to fill the vacancy with a Labour Party stooge.

KOOKY CAGE VISITS CAMELOT

HE IS known to have an interest in matters mystical and he reputedly bought his £865,000 house in Somerset because of its proximity to Glastonbury at the convergence of six ley-lines. Now, Hollywood star Nicolas Cage has visited the Camelot Castle Hotel in Tintagel, Cornwall, which is co-owned by Winchester-educated scientologist John Mappin, a scion of the Mappin & Webb jewellery dynasty.

Afterwards, Mappin boasted to 'dear friends and noble ambassadors of CamelotCastle' that Cage had 'experienced the Light Box'. Quite what 'the Light Box' is remains unclear, but thricemarried Cage was content to pose for a photograph with Mappin's partner and resident artist Ted Stourton.

Says a hotel aide: 'The Light Box is a surprise. It takes about half an hour and it is a sort of tour.'

THE credit crunch really must be biting -- toilet-rolls are being stolen from the snooty Hurlingham Club in South-West London, where the waiting list for membership stands at 15 years. In a bulletin about the issue entitled Conduct Unbecoming, the club warns: 'There are things happening here that definitely infra dig. Bad form. Not just cricket.' Of the disappearing lavatory paper, the club quips: 'At one stage we were losing so many that we almost turned back to telephone directories.' The newsletter also complains about a lady member: 'Seen filling her own bottle from the hand-lotion dispenser, the theft of decoration from the club Christmas tree and the theft of potpourri by the handful.' To 'flush out' the toilet roll thieves, the club says: 'We are not advocating spying, but it is surely not telling tales if a member discusses a suspicious act with a staff member.'

PS

DESPITE praising reality TV shows, author Julie Burchill has turned down the chance of appearing on ITV's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! 'If you're young, cute and unknown, there's no shame in doing it to draw attention to yourself, but at almost 50 I think that ship's sailed,' she tells me. 'And after turning down Celebrity Big Brother, when I watched Germaine Greer going around with a colander on her head my husband said to me: "Aren't you glad you didn't do that."' Ouch!

RE: Nic with artist Ted Stourton (not sure when it was taken; says yesterday)

I confess I didn't look at his other work, but I'm not convinced that one the artist is holding is actually "art"  but hey, I don't know anything except what I like.

Yeah I thought the same Jenny... there are glasses with removable shades you can place of top and it´s, well, more comfy than carrying two sets of glasses around.

Very cool find Sam.  I wonder if the painting Ted is holding is one that Nic was purchasing.  If so....the colors in the sky are breathtaking.

I would think the pic was taken last year maybe while Nic was spending time in England.  Currently he's in NYC filming so it can't have been taken yesterday.

Anyhoo.....here is a link to some info on Stourton.

http://www.camelotcastle.com/about-ted.htm

If you read down and go to where it says Artists Gallery you'll find lots of his work.

I particularily love the one with all the orange in it.  I also like the heart with the two figures in it.
