Austrians usually are aware if they are "foreigners" in their midst. With Nicolas Cage around. The Hollywood star lived for a week in the Sacher Hotel - but he is now filming in Hungary the movie "Season of the Witch". Before that was the stayed in Ausseerland-(and residential) place.
Thursday evening Cage visited with his wife Alice Kim, his son, Weston and the latter´s girlfriend the Albertina Museum - and was guided by House Director Mr Klaus Albrecht Schroeder through the Van Gogh exhibition. In comparison to other VIP guests (like Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie or Teri Hatcher) Cage was wandering about two hours, taciturn and highly concentrated. And moreover, according to the present photographer Andreas Tischler, "polite, not whimsical, sociable." This is otherwise unusual: "It is not necessary to behave like a big star all the time, being bitchy and asking for special wishes to attract attention."
Well here I am telling HIM what to do, as if I had some right... sorry about that. But I´ve been there and I know that people´s remarks sometimes can help, they are like a mirror held high to get a glimpse of the full picture.
And now.... here´s an interesting slip of the tongue. You´re gonna love this Bonnie. As usual I made a mistake with my expression of choice (I could never figure out English idioms and prepositions) and wrote "lust for life" instead of "zest for life" in my previous.... Well when I was checking out to correct myself... I found that "Lust for Life", apart from a popular catch phrase, is the title of a 1956 movie... ABOUT VAN GOGH. Yeah the Kirk Douglas one.
BTW I was lucky enough to attend a Van Gogh exhibition in Manhattan last week at the MoMA. Some of his "night" paintings... Dark settings, bold choice of colors. Great stuff. You could also see some of his letters to his brothers with sketches on them... He was so passionate and courageous about his art and yet misunderstood, maybe that´s what draws Nic to him?
I found a German article about Nic´s visit to the Albertina Museum last week... Will post it above this.
When we see the smile you describe, I'll be the first one at your door with a case of bubbly to TOAST his newfound happiness and his boldness and lust for life. I can't wait!

It actually pains me to see him like that, it really does.
I wish we could do someting to help him... but for all our positive vibes and good wishes there´s not much we can really do apart from showing him support and sending him encouragement...
I guess he´s the only one who can really help himself to regain his usual self. So I´ll change my initial wish to: please Nic do something. Sorry to sound blunt buddy but "we only hurt the ones we love". And platonic love sorta qualifies I guess...
Okay then, when we see his first bona fide smile after he´s rested and recovered from all this stressful stretch, we´ll toast to his boldness and lust for life... I always admired his ability to reinvent himself all over again.
So Nic don´t keep us waiting for too long Ok baby? We´re opening the Coppola wine bottle already and raising our cups...
I agree with everyone here about how much sadness and tired Nic seems to be in the latest photos of him. I guess it's all the work he's been doing no stop. Lets hope he don't burn himself out any time at all! He can take breaks if he wants I guess on projects but with one after another it's hard to do. Looks like when he's with his family he's seems better. We all care about his health and do worry about him from time to time, when he's working so hard on his films. Lets hope that he knows when to relax at times. Nancy
As PITA B said that he's worked non-stop, I hope that doesn't mean he'll retire soon. :(

Well, if what you say is true about Nic's finances, let's hope he can sell off the properties he doesn't use as soon as possible so he can bounce back to his former self. I miss that Nic and am worried about this one.

I'm sorry Sam............I think what I said came across wrong. What I meant is that the latest pics of Nic looks like he is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders and that whatever it is, I'm sure that it can be fixed.
I mean, maybe he's looking so down and out because he's worked non-stop on projects for over a year now and it's finally caught up with him. And if it's exhaustion due to working so much...then he can fix that by taking a few months off.....that kind of thing.
And when I said 'resistant' I meant that Nic obviously is a workaholic.....and workaholics are notoriously resistant to change but sometimes....people have to make themselves change the way they do things in life...including how they approach work.
Or...maybe he's not enjoying the 'WITCH' shoot....I mean, from the looks of it, it looks like it could be strenuous and cold out there in the mountains. And if that's the case, then that too can and will be fixed when the shoot ends.
As far as family goes.....the pics of him and his family show they all seem okay. His parents are getting older but there hasn't been any negative news about them that I'm aware of.
Anyway....I'm sorry for giving the wrong impression with what I said. I'm sure that whatever it is that has Nic looking so sad and hopeless....that it can be fixed by him one way or another.
Far easier said than done, I know.

Under his skin? Did something happen that I haven't heard about? Are his kids ok? His family? Didn't someone say that his mom is sick or was at one time? Is she ok? I can be such a blonde sometimes and forget that someone posted a news article. I do hope things will look up for him soon. He just looks so lost and hopeless to me.
All of the candid shots of him from the past two months have him looking like this, Sam. Lost, exhausted, and sad.
Whatever it is that is under his skin can be fixed I'm sure. It's just a matter of taking that first step in the right direction. But people can be so stubborn, ya know, about doing things they are resistant to do.
And Nic IS a Capricorn.....talk about stubborness......He may actually be his own worst enemy. :(
Anyhooo.....I'm sure he is surrounded by people who love him and are trying to help put a smile on his face.
